METATEXTUAL MEANS OF INTERTEXTUALITY IN CONTEMPORARY ENGLISH-LANGUAGE CHRISTIAN CHILDREN'S ANIMATION

Abstract

The purpose of the article is to analyse the manifestations of intertextuality and metatextuality in contemporary English-language Christian children's animation. The author proposes her own definition of intertextuality and metatextuality in Christian animation, and highlights common and distinctive means of expressing intertextuality and metatextuality in modern English-language animation. Methods. The research is based on general scientific and linguistic methods such as: deductive and inductive methods, descriptive method, hermeneutic method, method of intertextual analysis, method of dialogical interpretation of the text, which allowed to identify the means of manifestation of intertextuality and metatextuality in Christian animation. Results. It has been determined that intertextuality in Christian animation as a type of modern sermon is a text- and meaning-making category that forms the preaching genre through the paratextual manifestations, metatextual interpretation, hypertextual transformations and architextual connections of the Sacred Tradition texts, as well as by means of verbal and non-verbal textual borrowings belonging to other discursive practices and cultural traditions. The analysis of modern English-language Christian children's animation has proven that metatextual manifestations of intertextuality include commentary, explanation, edification, interpretation, assumption, question / answer, addition and expansion of information. Conclusions. It has been found that Christian animation has multi-level dialogic relations and connections between texts, comprising intertextual direct citation with such means of manifestation as: quotation-word, quotation-phrase, quotation-sentence, quotation-fragment of the text, and intertextual indirect citation with the following means of implementation: paraphrase, intertextual retelling, reminiscence, allusion. The article proves that intertextual retelling and paraphrase as means of expressing intertextuality differ from metatextual retelling by adding the author’s commentary, explanation, edification, interpretation, contrast, assumption, questions / answers.
