Abstract

The purpose of the article is to analyze the motif of the Sixtiers in famous Ukrainian writer Maryna Hrymych’s novel «Yura» which describes the social and art processes in Ukraine in 1960s. Methods. The elements of the following methods are used in the research: cultural and historical (helps to investigate the features of Ukrainian national character on back ground of historical epoch), aesthetic (allows analyzing novel as a phenomenon of literature and art), mythological (to cover the author’s reproduction of mythological images), hermeneutic (ensures free and open interpretation of the text with the possibility of new explanations), descriptive (systematization of separate elements in the writer’s text), intertextual (to elucidate the functions of poetical excerpts in the novel). The research is based on the general methods of analysis, synthesis, observation, selection, and systematization of the material. Results. The author of the article presents an analysis of Marina Hrymych’s novel «Yura» through the consideration of the cross-cutting motif of the Sixtiers, which plays an important role in the work. The writer develops this motif through assessments, memories and critical reviews of the Sixtiers by a wide variety of representatives of society – from students and publishing house employees to high-ranking officials and KGB employees and their informants. The author combines documentary in depicting the pages of the life and work of Mykola Vingranovsky, Yevhen Hutsalo, Ivan Dziuba, Ivan Drach, Mykola Lukash, Hryhor Tyutyunnyk and other Sixtiers writers with traditions and legends about them, born in the writing and literary circles. Conclusions. In Marina Hrymych’s novel «Yura», the Sixties are spoken of as a style of the era of reassessment of outdated dogmas in social life and the literary and artistic process of the post-Stalin era. And this style was provided not only by the efforts of bright creative personalities or well-known public figures, but also by ordinary people in general. The Sixtiers are represented as a community of intellectuals, obsessed eccentrics-loners who had a calling to shock the public and successfully achieved this, not afraid of suffering for it. The author draws a watershed between the Russian and Ukrainian Sixtiers, who acted and created in completely different circumstances.
