FROM SOCIOLOGY TO EDITORIAL STUDIES OF TRANSLATION: A METATHEORETICAL DIMENSTION

Abstract

Purpose. The purpose of the present article is to investigate the transition from sociological approaches to editorial perspectives in translation studies, with a focus on the metatheoretical dimension of this conceptual development. Methods. The research methods employed include description, analysis, and comparison of the sociology of translation along with theoretical propositions regarding editorial and publishing practices in modern translation studies. The article develops a holistic approach for the comprehensive study of publishing processes and translation strategies. It proposes considering editorial studies of translation as a separate area within translation studies, based on a metatheoretical review of contemporary translation studies discourse and its epistemological dynamics. Results. The article establishes a theoretical foundation for transitioning from sociological approaches to editorial perspectives in translation studies. It explores the evolution of theoretical considerations regarding translation editing and publishing (Mossop, 2020; Bisiada, 2014; Robin, 2014; Robin, 2018; Pillière, 2024; Odrekhivska, 2017). Furthermore, it outlines the methodological and conceptual challenges encountered within translation studies in the advancement of editorial studies of translation. Conclusions. In this study, we position editorial studies of translation as an important interdisciplinary direction within translation studies, focusing on the examination of the multifaceted process of preparing translated texts for publication and the role of editors alongside other actors in shaping the final product. The transition from sociological approaches to editorial studies of translation underscores the importance of understanding the connection between social structures and linguistic, textual, and narrative constructs of the translated edition, such as its adaptation to target functions and cultural transposition. Scholarly propositions in the field of editorial studies of translation, including theories and typologies of editorial interventions, models of editorial analysis, contribute to a comprehensive understanding of the complexities associated with creating high-quality translations.
