Abstract

The article is dedicated to the analysis of the frame conflict, arising between the speaker and the listener in the situation of misunderstanding. It has been established that the mutual background knowledge is fundamental for communication. Lack of background knowledge leads to communicative failure and misunderstanding. The investigation is based on samples from modern English novels.
