Abstract
The article is devoted to the bestiary of “The Precipice” by I.A. Goncharov covering the whole spectrum of the names of domestic and wild animals in the novel. The study reveals that the writer is primarily interested in the wild and domestic animals as the reflection of the character and only then he regards them as a free-standing world. The article unfolds the connection of the rhetorical menagerie with the heroes and the plot of the novel. Special focus is given to the bestiary meanings targeted on the personage of Raiskiy, without which the comparative analysis of the bestiary is senseless.
