THE FORMATION OF THE SEMANTIC STRUCTURE OF THE POSTPOSITION «UP» IN ENGLISH PHRASAL VERBS

Abstract

The article focuses on the formation of the semantic structure of the postposition «up» whose primary units are an adverb and a preposition. The emphasis is very much on the process of functional re-orientation of the primary units. In the course of investigation the lexico-semantic variants of their meanings are defined and compared. The three semantic categories of the postposition «up», namely: a locative category, a temporal category and an abstract one are revealed. The revealed semantic categories are involved into the determining of the meanings of the phrasal verb «go up».
